I always struggle to think of names for pieces that I write. This one was the result of desperate grappling: oboes and bassoons often put me in mind of pirate films and the slightly untethered nature of the piece put me in mind of cats, so I named it The Pirates Cat. Which was an awful name. So I re-christened it Cat Among the Pirates, which I think is marginally better.
It started life as a load of guitar chords jumping around in (mostly) fifths. I wrote them down but then deleted them as I built up the score, forgetting that I might want to refer to them later. Never mind.
It’s partly an exercise in counterpoint, particularly around the middle when the different parts play at different paces.
